City Kids Camp: New Location And Format, Same Great Fun!

Every August, the children of City Bible Church descend on Boring, Oregon, to encounter both God and some of the greatest fun of their lives. But not this year. This year, Boring will remain, well, boring.

Why?

City Kids Camp has moved!

Why Move Camp?

At the facilities in Boring, we were limited in the number of children who could attend. It broke our hearts every year to have to tell excited children that there weren’t any more spots available for them. At our new location, we will have room for every single child who wants to come.

Another challenge that many families faced was the cost of attending camp. When you have 2, 3, 4, or more kids who want to go, it can really add up. With our new location, we were able to lower the cost by over 50%. The cost of our previous location was going up, so we knew we had to make a change to keep the camp experience affordable for everyone.

While parents worried about money, one of the biggest challenges for the children attending camp was the food. Kids are known for being picky eaters, and many of them were less than satisfied with their options at the previous facilities. At our new location, the meals will be catered by well-known vendors. The kids will love the new food this year!

The most important thing that happens for the kids at camp isn’t the food or the fun, but their encounter with God. And part of what makes the encounters that our children have so powerful and lasting is the leaders who are there to help them make sense of their experience and guide them on the path to take going forward. We have amazing volunteers who help lead our children through the camp experience, but it can be difficult for them to make a 7-day commitment and take a whole week off from their work and lives. With our new shorter format and closer location, it is a lot easier for those with a passion for our kids to be able to be involved.

Our New Location

Where is this amazing new location that has unlimited space, great food, and low cost?

Our very own Rocky Butte Campus!

If you haven’t been there, Rocky Butte is an incredibly large campus with rolling green lawns, a sizeable chapel, numerous classrooms and even two indoor gyms. At Rocky Butte, we have many of the same amenities as the previous camp venue, but they are better. We found that by using our own facility, we can create a more accessible, better overall experience for our kids.

2018 Camp Theme

We have renamed our camp Summerfest. While Summerfest is a ton of fun and a great place for the kids to make lifelong friendships, that is not our primary goal. For us, the most important thing is to deliver the word of God in a dynamic way that is relevant and age-appropriate, and for the children to experience the presence of God. Inflatable water slides may be fun, but most kids say their favorite part of camp is the chapel services. At Summerfest, we want every child to worship Jesus, hear the word, and discover that God has called them with a purpose.

As such, our theme for Summerfest 2018 is identity in Christ. Our memory verse is Galatians 2:20:

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Our goal this year is to reveal what an identity in Christ looks like and how it is attainable for even a child to set as a foundation for their life. We will be focusing on the life and ministry of Paul and his journey from hated enemy of God’s plan to a true example of what living in Christ looks like. The children will be taken on a journey through each chapel service that culminates with how to live out a life with your identity in Christ. We want to achieve a greater depth with the kids this year through a more intensive and strategic focus on identity.
